AMD

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a progressive eye disease that affects the macula, a small area in the center of the retina that is responsible for sharp, central vision. AMD is one of the leading cause of vision loss among older adults in the world, and it can be classified as either dry or wet AMD.

Dry AMD is the more common type of AMD and occurs when the light-sensitive cells in the macula gradually break down, leading to a gradual loss of central vision. Wet AMD, on the other hand, is a more severe and less common form of the disease in which abnormal blood vessels grow beneath the retina, leading to rapid vision loss and, if left untreated, irreversible damage to the retina.

The causes of AMD are not fully understood, but age, genetics, and lifestyle factors such as smoking, poor nutrition, and obesity have been linked to an increased risk of developing the disease. If you have a family history of AMD or any of these risk factors, it is important to receive regular eye exams to detect the early signs of AMD.

At Chan & Chan Eye Clinic, we use a range of diagnostic tools to detect AMD, including a dilated eye exam, retinal photography, and optical coherence tomography (OCT). These tests allow our optometrists to closely examine the macula and detect any signs of early-stage AMD.

Once AMD has been diagnosed, it is important to monitor the disease regularly to help preserve your vision. Our optometrists may recommend a range of treatment options, including lifestyle changes and nutritional supplements. In some cases, we may refer you to an ophthalmologist for more specialized treatment options, such as injections or laser therapy.

At Chan & Chan Eye Clinic, our goal is to help you maintain clear and healthy vision for as long as possible. If you have any concerns about AMD or would like to schedule an eye exam, please contact us today to make an appointment with one of our optometrists.
